That's right, it's for sissies. By that, I mean...it's a great career move for women. Sisters or Moms, or even Grandmoms.
The whole world is touting the positive aspects of being your own boss by taking the entrepreneur's route, so I won't go on and on about why you should step off that corporate track and follow your own path. Instead, I'm going to talk a bit about why it's a good idea for women, especially.
Just the other day I received an email from Josephine Nicholas who is the "Chief Operating Officer of Published Daily, a technology company that helps professionals better communicate and market to their networks," so her note said.
Her email was one I thought worth sharing as she gives 3 Great Reasons Women Make Great Entrepreneurs...
1. Women have natural people skills - admit it, you like to network and talk and see people; or blog or twitter or whatever. The point is, women were the ones who gathered around the well and passed along the town gossip, which was sometimes just truth in story form. Women are good at being in people situations. That's an entrepreneurial skill we're pretty well born with.
2. Women are natural multi-taskers - Oh please - don't get me started! Women are forever doing two or three things at once. I watch TV and read or blog. I talk on the phone and answer emails and twitter. I do my banking online while listening to a podcast. Women have had to learn how to multi-task out of necessity. That isn't always a good thing...but, it's a necessary thing. And, we're good at it. That gives us a high heel up on the guys, when it comes to starting an entrepreneurial venture.
3. Women don't shy away from risk - Josephine says, "...when they are free of external structure, they gladly take the risk. They see the risk as their responsibility and they find the most creative way to carry that risk out." I'm not sure about that - we gals with families are a bit shy about risk. And yet, according to the Center for Women's Business Research, "Women business owners are prepared to face risk: most (66%) are willing to take above average or substantial risks for business investments."
So, in the end, we're wired for entrepreneurship. Maybe taking care of the house, and the kids, and the dog, and the car, and the yard, and the basement, and being Dr. Mom and psychologist Mom and taxi driver... maybe all those tasks are just part of the reason women creating new businesses is a good idea for today and every day in the future.
You can do it. Try. Fail. Try again. The only real failure, as someone wiser than I once said, is not trying at all. Go for it. We're right here to help you along.
